Yesterday, at approximately 4 am, we experienced a major hardware failure on one of the primary storage disk arrays used by many NJIT applications. We have been working since that time to restore services. As of noon today, approximately 70% of the consistency checks had completed. It is difficult to predict an exact time, but we expect the entire process to continue at least until this evening so we can ensure data integrity.

A full account to-date is below.

Problem Description:

Yesterday, at approximately 4 am, we experienced a major hardware failure on one of the primary storage disk arrays used by NJIT applications. This particular disk array provides one or more services to about 70% of academic and administrative applications at NJIT. Normally this type of hardware failure does not cause a disruption of service due to internal redundant components (in fact, systems administrators have exercised this internal redundancy many times in the past to replace failed components with no impact on service). However, this time, due to multiple failed components, the internal redundancy could not handle the hardware failure.

Systems Affected:

Systems affected by this hardware problem include the NJIT Web site, administrative e-mail (ADM), authentication middleware to cloud services (e.g. Moodle, Webmail by Google student e-mail), Highlander Pipeline, AFS academic file system, DFS departmental file system, and a number of ancillary components of the Banner ERP system (e.g. Cognos reporting, Banner job submission, e-print).

Current Status:

At this time, we do not expect all services to be fully restored until later this evening. A more detailed discussion of the restoration process is included below.

Staff are working to restore Moodle in a similar fashion

Faculty and staff that normally access Internet Native Banner (INB) through Highlander Pipeline may login at http://bninbts1.njit.edu:9090 (this requires VPN from off-campus). Self-Service Banner is not available.

Fixing the Problem:

Oracle system engineers have been on-site and working remotely with NJIT systems administrators since yesterday morning. Replacing failed hardware components is the simplest part of the solution and Oracle has been proactive in having available an ample supply of replacement parts.

The disk array under discussion totals approximately 54 TB of data split among 224 separate disk drives. The recovery process involves consistency checking and rebuilding parity checks on each of the disk drives. This is necessary to make sure no data has been lost or corrupted, and must be completed on all 224 separate disk drives before the entire disk array can be brought back online.

This consistency checks are a slow process. As of noon today, approximately 70% of the consistency checks had completed. We expect this process to continue at least through the business day at which time Oracle engineers will remotely run further diagnostics and manually recover any disk drives that have not passed the automated consistency checks. We expect this final review to last into this evening, after which all services can be brought back online. It is difficult to predict an exact time because the consistency checks for each of the 224 separate disks do not require the same amount of time. The good news is that an analysis of log files by Oracle engineers and the results of all consistency checks so far indicate no data loss or data corruption. Maintaining data integrity is the highest priority in this slow process.

The procedure to reconstruct data damaged in NJIT’s enterprise disk storage array is taken much longer than initially expected. Fortunately, there are no indications of any data loss, and data integrity is the highest priority. The Gmail authentication service has been restored and restoring the Moodle authentication service is under investigation.

At this time, the data recovery process that began at around 2:00 pm yesterday is approximately 2/3 complete. Unfortunately, services may remain unavailable for the better part of the day today if not longer. When there is more specific information available, it will be communicated.

Unfortunately, after careful analysis of the disk and data rebuild progress, and after discussions with Oracle engineers about the safest strategy for the remaining processes, we've determined that this service restoration might not be completed before 8:00AM Wednesday morning.

Our highest priority continues to be the integrity of the data. Our work with the Oracle engineers will continue throughout the night, and every effort will be made to restore all services as quickly as possible.

Evening Road Closure

For the ’10-‘11 academic year, we are pleased to announce that Gourmet Dining will be adding the “Spice Café” to our food court, which will feature Indian and Asian Halal dishes and combos. It will replace the Hersey’s station, and was created to better respond to the needs of our diverse population.

There will be no price increases at any of our Ala Carte stations or for the price of coffee, teas, eggs, bagels and bread.

However, effective July 5th, some adjustments in pricing will occur as we must accommodate the rising cost of operations and facility upgrades. This coming year will see a 4% increase in meal plans and catering, including Ala Carte pricing in our Pub and Food Court areas. As stated above, the 4% increase above does not apply to many of our most popular offerings.

Construction Update: Bleeker Street Closing

Bleeker Street Closing

Steel for the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility is being delivered beginning Monday, May 24, 2010. To accommodate the deliveries, Bleeker Street will be closed from Monday, May 24 through Thursday, May 27, 2010. During that week water taps and sewer connections will be made to provide services for the facility. We do not expect any disruptions in service to any Campus Buildings. Lot 7 will be open as usual exiting east to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreation Facility has been made possible, in part, by a gift from Vincent Naimoli ’62, Chairman and CEO Anchor Industries International; Chairman Emeritus/Founder, Tampa Bay Rays and member of the NJIT Board of Overseers.

Dr. William Spillers passes away

Dr. William Spillers, distinguished professor and former chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Bill began his career at NJIT as a professor and chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in 1990 and served in that capacity until June 1998. Prior to joining the NJIT faculty he was a professor of civil engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He received the Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1961.

Traffic restriction notice

The Newark Police Department has informed us that NBC has made arrangements with the City of Newark to film a television show near the intersection of Bleeker St. and MLK Blvd.

The filming will commence on Monday, March 15th and continue through Thursday, March 18th. During the affected dates, there will be no parking along both sides of Bleeker St. from Summit St. down to MLK Blvd. Additionally, there will be no parking along both sides of MLK Blvd. from Central Ave. to New St. Passage along the affected section of Bleeker St. will be narrow and there may be periodic closures of Bleeker St.

Shutdown of computer systems and services for maintenance

Routine maintenance needs to be conducted in the GITC-5302 computer room on our enterprise disk hardware.

We have scheduled a shutdown of most major computer systems and services from from 11 pm Saturday March 13, 2010, to 11 am Sunday March 14, 2010.

In the unlikely event of unforeseen problems, we have scheduled an additional shutdown from 11 pm Friday March 19, 2010, to 11 am Saturday March 20, 2010.

You will be able to access our NJIT network to connect to the internet. However, some of the major services we have to disable are Highlander Pipeline, faculty/staff email typically read with MS Outlook, student email, Banner and other web services, and Moodle courseware. Your incoming e-mail messages will be queued at their source and delivered once connectivity to NJIT has been restored. Most internet service providers will attempt to deliver a message for 3 days.

The www.njit.edu web site will be viewable and will display information about the outage. Service startup priority will be given to student related services such as Moodle courseware and student email.

Contact the IST Computing Helpdesk at (973)596-2900 during regular business hours with any questions or concerns not addressed here.

Bleeker Street closing for work on The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility

On Tuesday, March 9 and Wednesday, March 10th Bleeker Street will be closed for work on underground utility connections for The Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.

This facility has been made possible, in part, by a gift from Vincent Naimoli ’62, Chairman and CEO Anchor Industries International; Chairman Emeritus/Founder, Tampa Bay Rays.

It will be approximately 25,600 square feet, housing courts for tennis, volleyball, basketball and other athletic and recreational activities. The facility will be heated, air conditioned and utilize a universal sports flooring.

Completion is expected in January 2011.

Simultaneous sol0 exhibitions by Ryan Roa and Glen G. Guarino

Both exhibitions will open with a reception on Thursday, March 4 (5-9pm) in the College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) Gallery. The gallery is located on the 2nd floor of Weston Hall of New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) campus, in Newark, NJ. Standing on the Corner- Ryan Roa

Ryan Roa is interested in the circular relationship that objects (as occupiers of space) and images (as representations of space) maintain. His artwork consists of still images, moving images, objects and installations that utilize scale, symbol, space and interactivity. The concepts behind Roa’s work stem directly from life experience and focus intently on those aspects of his surroundings which appear to be in flux.

Born of Irish-Columbian decent, Roa grew up in northern NJ. He has worked as a teacher, stockbroker, carpenter, and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant, serving for one year in the Iraq war. He studied painting at the University of Arizona, art education and sculpture at SUNY New Paltz and received a MFA in Combined Media from Hunter College. Roa has exhibited at the Jersey City Museum, Bronx Museum, Neversink Valley Area Museum, School of Visual Arts, Oakland University, Artspace in Raleigh, NC and Rush Arts, NYC. He has participated in residency programs at the Bronx Museum, Gallery Aferro, and Pace University. Roa is currently based in the New York area. For more information, go to: www.ryanroa.com.

Functional Forms- Glen G. Guarino

Guarino creates his work by primarily using fine and antique hand tools rather than machinery. This intimacy with tools and wood allows him to create pieces that impart serenity and calm, reflecting the inherent grace and strength of various local and exotic woods including Walnut, Wenge, Curly Shedua, and Ebonized Sapele. His table designs often incorporate glass, while mirror designs sometimes include black cord to introduce variations in texture. These designs are unique from each other and have hand-rubbed finishes.

For nearly 30 years, Guarino’s work has been frequently exhibited in juried gallery exhibits and has been published in Fine Woodworking Magazine, NJ Savvy Living Magazine, and in “500 Tables” published in 2009 by Lark Books among many others. He holds a Master of Studio Art Degree with High Honors from Kean University and is currently an Adjunct Professor at William Patterson University Fine Arts Department. H1/N1 Vaccine For Students, Today and Thursday

The H1N1 vaccine will be available to registered students, free of charge, today, 12/9, from 1:15 pm to 3:45 pm in Campus Center rooms 215 and 220 and tomorrow 12/10 from 9:30 am to 12 noon and 1:15 pm to 3:45 pm in Campus Center room 240.

The vaccine is free of charge and available to students who are 24 years or younger, and/or those who have priority consideration will also be given to students, regardless of age, who care for an infant less than 6 months of age, who are pregnant or have an underlying chronic diseases such as asthma, chronic lung disease, diabetes, heart disease (not including high blood pressure), neurological disease, etc.

Students under the age of 18 must have a signed consent by a parent or legal guardian.

Please bring your NJIT student ID to verify your student status. If you are caring for an infant, please bring verification.

Vaccine will also be available on December 9th and December 10th during the same time as above, location to be announced.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR EVERYONE: WIDESPREAD OUTBREAK IS STILL POSSIBLE

We must continue to be vigilant in preventing the spread of flu by doing the following:

Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water or with hand sanitizer, especially after coughing or sneezing.
Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hand.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth; germs are spread that way.
Don’t share eating utensils, drinking containers.
Avoid close bodily contact with individuals who appear ill.

The common signs and symptoms of flu include the following; fever/ chills, cough and / or sore throat. Additionally you may experience headache, general body aches, sneezing and/or runny nose, extreme fatigue, nausea and/or vomiting, and poor appetite.

Fever is considered to be a temperature that is equal or greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius, or if a person feels very warm, has a flushed appearance, or is sweating or is shivery. If a temperature is taken, it should be taken before a fever reducer such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen are given. Aspirin should be avoided if under age 20.

What you do if you believe you have contacted the flu?

Self isolate. Stay at home in a separate room or, if you are a student, in your residence hall room for at least 24 hours after the fever, or symptoms of fever resolve. Students in residence should immediately notify their R.A. or Hall Director if they are unable to go home in order for appropriate care arrangements can be made.

See your health care provider immediately if your symptoms are more severe such as shortness of breath, chest pain, excessive vomiting, and cough with blood tinged mucous, sudden deterioration of your condition. Do not go to class or work or come to campus. Avoid contact with others.

Get plenty of bed rest, increase fluid ingestion such as water, clear soups and broths, ginger ale, weak tea, and/or sports drinks. Avoid alcohol.

For sore throat, gargle with warm salt and water and use lozenges. Humidify the air with pans of water in the room or with a vaporizer.

Don’t sweat it out by layering on more clothing or blankets then usual since this can increase the body temperature. Instead take a fever reducer such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin).

As per university policy, students who are ill and miss class for more than three days and/or missing presentations, quizzes or exams should notify the Dean of Students Office by emailing doss@njit.edu or by calling (973) 596-3470. The Dean’s office will notify faculty members. Be prepared to provide documentation, especially if you are missing an exam.

NJIT aspiring architects work with Habitat for Humanity Newark on plans for affordable housing

Students in NJIT's architecture studio welcomed a group of guests on Saturday to review their designs and provide practical feedback on the plans. The homeowners, all current residents of homes built by Habitat for Humanity Newark, reviewed designs that are slated to become the next generation of townhouses built by Habitat for Humanity in Newark beginning as early as next year. Note: NJIT students must be registered for 2010 Spring classes to be eligible to register for NJIT parking. Rutgers and ECC students are not eligible.

Please register you car now through the Spring 2010 Online Parking Registration System so that the parking charges show on your 2010 Spring invoice. Students may register up to two vehicles per semester.

Parking fees will be charged to your student account and will be included on your web tuition statement. Payments can be included with your tuition payment or made online at http://my.njit.edu.

Parking fees for the semester are:

$125 for full-time students (12 or more credits)
$65 for part-time students (11 or less credits)

NJ sales tax (7 percent) will be charged to commuter students.

Commuter students are those students who do not reside in university housing. Adjustments to your parking fee (to reflect course load changes and housing status) will be adjusted by the Bursar Office, effective after the fifth day of each semester.

Refunds must be requested in writing before the fifth day of the semester. Parking hang tags must be returned before a refund can be processed.

A parking hang tag and instructions will be mailed to the address you choose on-line starting in January. Your NJIT ID card will automatically be activated for access to lot gates.

As part of its year-long Centennial celebration, the Newark Museum has commissioned the award-winning, Newark-based filmmakers Marylou Tibaldo-Bongiorno and Jerome Bongiorno to create a film about Newark.

Shot in black-and-white and filmed in 3D, the film—presented as a large-scale projection in the darkened space of the Museum’s South gallery—is a moving and immersive experience that provides visitors with a feeling of actually being in the places depicted. Many areas documented in the film, like Military Park or the grand Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, may be familiar, but the unusual vantage points and camera angles employed provide a new experience of these landmarks. The Bongiornos have also highlighted “hidden gems” within the city, sites that many visitors and even residents may not know exist.

Eating and Dining at NJIT

Hey! Here's what's new for eating on campus:

The Trattoria (pizza place) has been refurnished by GDS with additional seating, booths, new tables and chairs, and a glass enclosed front.
A “hydration station” has been added to the continuous dining venue.
The cost of wine, beer, and liquor ordered through GDS catering services has been reduced by about 50%.
All on-campus catering can be done only by GDS in order to comply with the requirements of our food services contract, New Jersey Alcohol and Beverage Commission, and the need for timely clean-up and maintenance of NJIT facilities.
Access to the University Club is restricted only to members and their guests. This is a requirement of the license issued to NJIT by the New Jersey Alcohol and Beverage Commission. Effective September 14, 2009, no order can be made in the Club without the four digit number of the club member. Membership can be secured for an annual fee of $25 by logging on to http://universityclub.njit.edu.
Two additional floor managers have been hired by GDS to insure quality of service to all patrons.
Peter Fischbach, GDS Executive Chef and Director of Food Services at NJIT captured second prize in the 2009 Great American Seafood Cook-Off hosted in New Orleans this past July. The Cook-Off is among the nations most prominent food competitions including teams of celebrity chefs from across the nation.

The overall feedback from the NJIT community about dining services during this past year has been highly positive. Feedback can be given by logging on to http://www.gourmetdiningllc.com. .

Internet Connectivity Maintenance is scheduled for Saturday, March 21, 2009 from 11 PM lasting until 7 AM Sunday, March 22, 2009. During this time there will be one large outage of 2 to 4 hours, and several smaller outages of 15 to 30 minutes each. NJIT Men's Basketball Wins 61-51 Over Bryant; Breaks 51-Game Losing Streak

Sophomore guard Jheryl Wilson scored 26 points, including 20 in the first half, for NJIT, as the Highlanders defeated visiting Bryant, 61-51, Wednesday night to halt a 51-game losing streak.

The Highlanders, who last won on February 19, 2007 (78-74 at Longwood), never trailed by more than three points and took the lead for good when Wilson hit a jump shot to make it 12-10 for NJIT with 13:02 left in the first half of Wednesday’s game against fellow Division I Independent Bryant.

NJIT senior Eric Mattessich is featured in the New York Times on Sun, Jan 4, 2009. The article describes a device he has designed to reduce emissions from hybrid car engines. If his design is patented and prototyped, greenhouse gas emissions from hybrid engines could be cut by 20 percent. His device would also increase the efficiency of hybrid engines by 20 percent.

Dealing effectively with climate change presents political challenges that can be even more complex than the science involved. In the final Fall Technology and Society Forum presentation on November 12, David Orr will explore critical climate-change issues in the context of U.S. politics and policy decisions.

In addition to his current affiliations with Oberlin College and the University of Vermont, Orr has been a scholar in residence at Ball State University, the University of Washington and other universities, and he has lectured at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe. His career as a scholar, teacher, writer and entrepreneur spans fields as diverse as environment and politics, environmental education, campus greening, green building, ecological design and climate change.

In 1987, Orr organized studies that helped to launch the green campusmovement. He organized the first conference on the effects of impending climate change on the banking industry.Co-sponsored by then Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, the conference brought together prominent bankers and leading climate experts.

Orr initiated the effort to design the first substantially green building on a U.S. campus in 1996. The Adam Joseph Lewis Center at Oberlin purifies all wastewater and is powered entirely by sunlight.Most importantly, it is a laboratory in sustainability that trains students for careers in solving environmental problems.

In a 2000 Chronicle of Higher Education article, Orr proposed carbon neutrality for colleges and universities. Current projects include defining a climate-action plan for the incoming president’s first 100 days in office, and working with prominent legal scholars to define the rights of posterity in cases where the actions of the present generation might deprive posterity of “life, liberty, and property.”

Orr is the author of five books and co-editor of three others. Ecological Literacy, described as a "true classic" by Garrett Hardin, is widely read and used at numerous colleges and universities. Earth in Mind has been praised by people as diverse as biologist E.O. Wilson and writer, poet and farmer Wendell Berry.

In a time of climate crisis, we face daunting and multifaceted challenges. Certain neglected communities, such as the South Bronx, New Orleans and Newark, have long been overburdened by environmental and economic disparity. These communities will suffer the most from the impact of climate change. Poverty, unemployment, health disparities and environmental burdens will be exacerbated if solutions to our climate crisis are not identified and implemented.

Miquela Craytor, executive director of Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx), will discuss how environmental justice solutions are necessary to change this dire scenario, and how the process must start within communities with the greatest need. She will share insights into projects where green fabrication, green roofs, and green-collar job training provide alternatives to the current polluting economy. These green technologies offer hope, not only for addressing our climate crisis, but also for eradicating poverty.

Sustainable South Bronx (SSBx) promotes environmental justice solutions through innovative, economically sustainable projects informed by community need. Craytor joined SSBx in 2006 and has overseen initiatives to increase the organization’s effectiveness within the community. Previously, she was senior planner for economic development at Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, consultants to the office of Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion, Jr. Craytor, who holds a master’s in city and regional planning and a bachelor’s in planning and public policy and management, was the first to work in this position. The post was created in response to the growing importance of long-term sustainability concerns in the borough’s economic development projects.

In Memory of Dana Knox

Dr. Dana E. Knox, Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Otto H. York Department of Chemical, Biological and Pharmaceutical Engineering and Associate Provost for Undergraduate Programs at the New Jersey Institute of Technology passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2008. Dr. Knox was born in upstate New York, and received BS (1977), MS (1978) and PhD (1982) degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic University in Troy, New York. He began his career on the faculty at NJIT in 1983, and he joined the Provost’s Office at NJIT in 2004. This year he would have celebrated his 25-year anniversary at NJIT.
